How meeting detection and recording works

How MagicScreen auto-detects meetings, what the dock controls do, and how to record manually.

Automatic detection

Once the desktop app is set up and its permissions are granted, MagicScreen watches for meetings in the background. When you join a call in a supported app — Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, and other common platforms — MagicScreen detects it and begins recording and transcribing automatically.

When a meeting starts and the app isn't in focus, you may see a Meeting started notification with a Select a script prompt and an Open button to jump into the live view.

💡 Detection relies on the Screen Recording and Accessibility permissions. If meetings aren't being detected, re-check those in Installing the desktop app or see Troubleshooting.

The dock

The dock is a small bar that stays at the bottom of your screen. It has three controls:

  • Open / Close — opens or closes the main panel (the live meeting view, your meetings, knowledge, accounts, and settings).
  • Record / Stop — the round red button starts a recording; the square button stops it. A spinner appears briefly while starting or stopping.
  • Show / Hide notifications — the eye icon toggles whether insight and script notifications appear on screen. Use Hide notifications while screen sharing.

The dock stays out of your way and doesn't steal focus from your meeting.

Recording manually

If you're using a meeting app that isn't auto-detected, you can capture the conversation yourself:

  1. Click the round red record button on the dock.
  2. MagicScreen starts recording and transcribing.
  3. Click the square stop button when you're done.

Meeting states

A meeting moves through a simple lifecycle:

  • Live — the call is in progress; transcript and insights stream in real time.
  • Ended — recording has stopped. The meeting moves to your Meetings tab, where the transcript stays available and any attached notes are generated.

Meeting limits

Your plan includes a set number of meetings per month (the Free plan includes 10). If you reach your limit, MagicScreen shows a Meeting limit reached notification — "Upgrade your plan to record more meetings." See Plans and billing to raise or remove the limit.
